1.Introduction

Geotextile, also known as geotextile fabric, is a permeable geosynthetic material that exists between soil and pipes, gabions,or retaining walls, enhancing water movement and hindering soil movement.

Continuous filament non woven geotextile is made from super strength polyester chips as raw materials, and is produced through spinning, air stretch, web laying,pre-pressing and needling punched.

2.Polyester Filament Geotextile Manufacturing Process

The series of needle punched non woven geotextile products are formed through fine carding, multiple precise needle punching or appropriate hot rolling treatment.Long-fiber needle punched non woven geotextile is made by stretching the fibers through jet drawing, laying them into a fiber web,and then pre-pressing the fiber web through an overheated roller and reinforcing it with needling to form a fabric. The needling needles have hooking needles, repeatedly needling the fiber web, hooking and reinforcing the fibers to form needle punched non woven geotextile.

3.Polyester Filament Geotextile Features

*It has stable physical properties and can maintain its original performance for a long time

*It has stable chemical properties and strong resistance to acids and alkalis

*Good water permeability

*It can withstand high temperatures, freeze and adapt to different external environments

*It is light in weight, can be packaged, transported and stored as required, and is convenient for construction

4.Polyester Filament Geotextile Applications

*Isolation: Geotextiles are used to isolate building materials with different physical properties, preventing the loss and mixing of two or more materials, maintaining the overall structure and function of the materials, and increasing the load-bearing capacity of the materials

*Drainage: Geotextiles are excellent water-conducting materials. They can form drainage channels within soil structures, expelling excess liquids and gases from within the soil structures

*Filtration: When water flows from fine-grained soil layers into coarse-grained soil layers, the excellent air permeability and water permeability of needle punched geotextiles are utilized to allow water to pass through and effectively intercept particles, fine sand, small stones etc., thereby maintaining the stability of water and soil engineering

*Protection: Effectively diffuse, transfer or decompose concentrated stress to prevent soil from being damaged by external forces

*Sealing: Geotextiles, in combination with other materials, form impermeable layers in the soil layer

*Reinforcement: Utilizing geotextiles to enhance the tensile strength and anti-deformation capacity of soil, improve the stability of building structures, and enhance the quality of soil

*Other: Long fiber non woven geotextiles can be combined with other geosynthetic materials such as geogrids, geomembranes, and drainage nets to form composite geosynthetics

1.Introduction

Polypropylene continuous filament non woven geotextile is made from special polypropylene raw materials. It is formed into continuous polypropylene filaments through spinning and stretching, followed by continuous web laying, multiple needling and consolidation, and then expansion and shaping, and finally hot-rolled into a non woven geotextile fabric.

2.Polypropylene Filament Geotextile Features

*Low density: At room temperature, its density is only 0.91g/cm ² (1.38g/cm ² for polyester), making it the lightest material among synthetic fibers

*High mechanical properties: Under the same grammage, polypropylene continuous filament fabric has high tensile strength, high puncture resistance and stable structure

*Good chemical stability: It has excellent acid and alkali resistance

*Good water permeability and drainage performance: Polypropylene material has good hydrophobicity, does not absorb water, does not hydrolyze, and water can easily penetrate through

*Low-temperature resistance: The performance of polypropylene non woven geotextile is almost unaffected at low temperatures

3.Polypropylene Filament Geotextile Advantages

*The chemical properties of polypropylene continuous filament non woven geotextile are extremely stable.Except for concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid, it hardly reacts with other reagents and can be used in an environment with a PH value ranging from 2 to 13 without being affected. Polypropylene continuous filament non woven geotextile can maintain almost 100% of its strength after being soaked in calcium hydroxide solution at 60℃ for three days

*Under the condition of the same gram weight, the lower the density, the greater the number of fibers per unit area, and the thickness of the formed product is also larger than that of other material needle punched geotextiles, and various strength indicators are also higher. Under the same gram weight conditions, polypropylene filament non-woven geotextile has high tensile strength, high puncture resistance and stable structure

*Under the irradiation of 340nm ultraviolet lamps and spraying (for 350 hours), the strength retention rate of 350g of polypropylene continuous filament non woven geotextile with anti-ultraviolet masterbatch added reached over 95%, and some indicators were even better than before irradiation

4.Polypropylene Filament Geotextile Applications

*Sliding layers and isolation layers of high-speed railway ballastless track

*Airport runway isolation layer

*Highway waterproof and crack-proof base fabric

*Anti-seepage cushion layer for subways and tunnels

*Bank protection and bottom protection for water conservancy projects

*Anti-seepage and site closure for solid waste/tailings/landfill sites

*Wrap the blind ditches with crushed stones for isolation and filtration

*Slope protection/isolation and water filtration behind retaining walls

Woven Geotextile vs Non Woven Geotextile

The primary difference between ‘non woven geotextile’ and ‘woven geotextile’ lies in their manufacturing process, structure, and resulting properties, which are both widely used in road construction, drainage systems, landfill and all kinds of civil engineering. But they differ in their manufacturing processes, properties, and applications.

1. Manufacturing Process & Structures

Woven Geotextile

  – Made by weaving continuous synthetic fibers (usually polypropylene or polyester) into a fabric using traditional weaving techniques.

  – Produces a strong, uniform, and stable fabric with high tensile strength.

  – The fibers are arranged in a specific pattern (plain weave or twill weave) to create a more structured and uniform material

Non Woven Geotextile

  – Made by bonding synthetic fibers together mechanically (needle-punching), thermally, or chemically.

  – Results in a felt-like, porous fabric with higher permeability.

  – The fibers are randomly oriented, creating a web-like structure.

2.Physical Properties

Woven Geotextile

  – Thinner and less porous.

  – Lower permeability, making them less effective for drainage or filtration.

  – Higher tensile strength, especially in the direction of the weave.

  – More resistant to punctures and abrasion.

Non Woven Geotextile

  – Thicker and more porous.

  – Higher permeability, allowing water to pass through easily.

  – Lower tensile strength compared to woven geotextiles but still strong enough for many applications.

  – Better at separating and filtering materials.

3. Applications

Woven Geotextile

  – Road stabilization (subgrade reinforcement)

  – Embankment support

  – Erosion control in slopes

  – Primarily used for reinforcement and stabilization purposes.

  – Roadways, railways, embankments, and retaining walls to increase load-bearing capacity and prevent soil movement.

  – Suitable for applications requiring high tensile strength and durability.

Non Woven Geotextile

  – Drainage systems (behind retaining walls, under roads)

  – Landfill liners and leachate collection

  – Protection for geomembranes

  – Soil filtration in silt fences

  – It is used for separation, filtration, and drainage applications.

  – Ideal for road construction (base stabilization), erosion control, landfill liners, and subsurface drainage systems.

  – Suitable for environments requiring high permeability and flexibility.

4.Cost & Durability

Woven geotextiles are generally more durable under heavy loads but can be more expensive

  – More resistant to UV degradation and chemical exposure.

  – Longer lifespan in demanding conditions, especially in reinforcement applications

  – More expensive due to the weaving process and higher tensile strength.

  – Justified in applications requiring strong reinforcement.

Non woven geotextiles are cost-effective for filtration and drainage but may degrade faster under UV exposure if not stabilized

– More susceptible to UV degradation and chemical exposure over time.

 – Typically have a shorter lifespan compared to woven geotextiles in harsh environments.

 – Generally less expensive than woven geotextiles.

 – Cost-effective for applications where high tensile strength is not critical.
